Every bonsai has a story, and so does Feral Root Bonsai.

My bonsai journey began in 1993. Like many beginners, I was fascinated by the beauty and artistry of bonsai but had little understanding of what it truly took to grow and care for one. There were no YouTube tutorials, online communities, or endless resources at my fingertips. Most of what I learned came through trial and error.

And there were plenty of errors.

Trees were lost. Mistakes were made. Some survived despite my efforts, and some didn't. Looking back, those early failures were some of my greatest teachers. Every mistake taught me something new about patience, horticulture, and the unique needs of each species.

Life eventually became busy, and my bonsai hobby was placed on hold. For several years, I stepped away from the art. But in 2005, the passion returned.

This time, I approached bonsai differently.

Rather than building a large collection overnight, I started with a single tree. I focused on learning everything I could about that species, its watering needs, growth habits, pruning techniques, seasonal care, and long-term development. As my knowledge grew, so did my collection. I would gradually add another tree, then another, taking the time to understand each species before moving on to the next.

What started as a hobby slowly became a lifelong pursuit.

Over the years, bonsai taught me far more than how to shape trees. It taught me patience in a world that demands instant results. It taught me to appreciate slow progress. It taught me that growth often happens beneath the surface long before it becomes visible above the soil.

Most importantly, bonsai became a reminder of my faith.

Just as a bonsai tree is shaped through years of pruning, refinement, and care, God shapes each of us through the seasons of our lives. There are times of growth, times of waiting, and even times of pruning. While those seasons aren't always easy, they are often where the greatest transformation occurs.

In January 2026, after more than three decades of learning, growing, making mistakes, and refining my craft, Feral Root Bonsai was officially established.

Feral Root Bonsai was created to share more than just trees. It was founded to build a community where people can experience the beauty of bonsai, learn the art, develop their skills, and discover the lessons these miniature trees can teach us about patience, perseverance, and growth.
